Sustainable Acoustics' WES Lottie Tour for Tomorrow's Engineers Week

An image of the WES Lottie Tour banner. The banner is mainly pink, showing the Tomorrow's Engineers Week logo, text saying 'Power up your passion; 11 to 15 Nov 2024; #TEWeek24; #WESLottieTour'. It shows an image of a Lottie doll wearing builders hat and hi vision vest.

It’s Tomorrow’s Engineers Week! We at Sustainable Acoustics stand by Engineering UK and the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) in championing this fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on engineering, engineering careers and engineering professionals.

We have joined in with the WES Lottie Tour, a campaign aimed at promoting women in STEM by showing a ‘Lottie’ doll some of the work that we do in our engineering discipline.

Day 2: Lottie Explores Sound Monitoring

An image of the Lottie doll holding onto the stand for an acoustic monitor. In the image, you can see a large farm field, with two acoustic monitors placed about 5 metres apart.

On Day 2 of Tomorrow's Engineers Week, Lottie explored sound monitoring!

Lottie went on a sound survey with Andy Officer, who said that she enjoyed the fresh air and was interested to learn that noise surveys help us to understand the existing soundscape so that we can advise our clients on the best way to design their scheme.

This sound survey was to determine the existing background and ambient sound levels for assessing the impact of a proposed solar farm, which we are receiving a lot of enquiries about at the moment.

We’re also receiving a lot of enquiries about air source heat pumps, which require a similar sound survey but usually with fewer monitoring positions over a smaller area.

Day 3: Lottie Learns about Sustainability

Pictured is a Lottie doll sitting on Di Rogers' desk. She is typing on a computer. In the background, there is Sustainable Acoustics' logo.

On Day 3 of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, Lottie spent some time with Di Rogers, our Sustainability Director, to understand why sustainability is so important. She learned that the climate and nature crisis are deepening and that we all need to take urgent action.

Lottie was glad to hear that Sustainable Acoustics’ office is powered by 100% green energy supplied by Ecotricity and that their next sustainability step is to install solar panels to generate their own electricity.

Day 4: Lottie Explores Gym Acoustics

Pictured is the Lottie doll being held in front of a stripped out room. The room looks like there is building work taking place. There are two windows.

On Day 4 of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, Lottie explored Gym Acoustics!

Lottie is pictured admiring a stripped-out unit above a café. It wasn't much to look at at the time, but Lottie learned that testing the sound insulation performance of the separating floor/ceiling enables us to provide the appropriate acoustic advice to turn this space into a glorious fitness suite that won’t disturb the coffee drinkers below. Sustainable Acoustics provides sound insulation advice like this for a wide range of applications, including for residential, leisure, commercial and industrial uses.

Day 5: Lottie Attends the John Connell Awards on the last day of the WES Lottie Tour

An image of the Lottie doll sat in front of a trophy. Both the lottie doll and the trophy are balanced on a wall. Behind the trophy and the Lottie doll, the Thames river and the London Eye can be seen. It is night time, and the skyline of London is lit up in the background of the image.
Lottie sat with the John Connell Soundscape Award presented to Sustainable Acoustics and Thames Valley Police.

On Day 5 of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, Lottie attended the Noise Abatement Society’s John Connell Awards with Sustainable Acoustics!

Lottie was excited to have the opportunity to attend the Noise Abatement Society’s John Connell Awards with Sustainable Acoustics Managing Director Peter Rogers and colleague Angela Lamacraft.

She was delighted that Sustainable Acoustics won the Soundscape Award for their work with Thames Valley Police, where the innovative application of acoustics and emerging soundscape techniques are resulting in the creation of a more mentally and physically supportive working environment for police officers.

A novel approach was taken to assess the baseline as it was suspected the problem was not solely noise-related. Based on the findings, ten acoustic and non-acoustic design priorities were identified, leading to proposed interventions expected to provide multiple benefits.

A summary of the project can be found in our recent blog post about our John Connell Awards submission.

Lottie also enjoyed seeing Angela present the 2024 Institute of Acoustics Secondary School award to the winning school children. You can read more about this in our recent blog post about Angela presenting this inspiring award.

Lottie’s glad that she could share her experiences with Sustainable Acoustics with you – she hopes that other Lottie dolls across the country had as much fun as she did!
