What ISO 14001 Means For Sustainable Acoustics

At Sustainable Acoustics, sustainability is at the core of our mission. Achieving ISO 14001 certification is something that many SMEs feel is for larger companies, but we felt that it was necessary to show we’d gone the extra mile. It reflects our dedication to integrating environmental considerations into every aspect of our operations.

From minimising waste to optimising resource use, we are committed to minimising the negative impacts that operating our business may have on the environment, whilst we pursue our vision of making a positive impact through the work that we do - to use acoustics for life – for a more harmonious, restorative and prosperous world.

Our successful certification against the rigours of the ISO 14001 standard shows our commitment to the environment, as part of our ESG action plan. Our environmental programme – the ‘E’ in ESG, is but one part of the bigger sustainability picture, which includes our commitment to reach the highest bars of Social and Governance performance, making up our sustainable business model.

How We Got Here

We have been tracking our environmental performance for over a decade and had already made significant strides in reducing our impact on the environment. During this period, we had reduced our carbon footprint, increased recycling, and had been purchasing green energy from Ecotricity. But our environmental performance improvements had been hampered by residing in leased offices with gas central heating and low levels of insulation.

In November 2023 we moved to our new owner-occupied BREEAM Excellent offices, located in the South Downs National Park, just south of Winchester.  Now that we had much more control over the building, we decided it was the right time to go for ISO 14001 certification of our business management system, to help us drive forward even higher levels of environmental performance improvements. Forthcoming plans include investment in solar, battery storage and EV chargers.

Peter Rogers, Managing Director of Sustainable Acoustics said:

“It has been an exciting, but challenging journey, to embed and fully implement the ISO 14001 standard across the whole business. Ultimately, it has been a robust way of strengthening our systems, as well as providing the basis for deeper and faster-paced environmental improvements. By successfully gaining ISO 14001 certification, this will enable us to make even more robust and rapid-paced environmental and business management advancements going forward.”

Where We’re Going

This certification is not just a milestone on our roadmap but a testament to our ongoing journey towards environmental excellence which includes our commitment to reaching Net Zero by 2030. We will continue to uphold these standards, ensuring that our practices truly contribute to a sustainable future for all.

Diana Rogers, Director (Sustainability) and Co-owner of Sustainable Acoustics said:

“We are thrilled we have achieved this important step along our journey to sustainability and beyond – to restorative business. We extend our gratitude to our team, clients and partners for their support in achieving this significant accomplishment. Together, we are building a more sustainable world.”
